Beginners Bonsai Bootcamp

To celebrate the debut of Ma-Ke Bonsai in Portugal, we have teamed up with Rua Chumbaria to give you a special session.

Celebrating over 15 years as our most popular offering, the Beginners Bonsai Course is an intensive, one-day workshop designed to immerse you in the art of bonsai. This course suits novices yet remains a valuable learning experience for more seasoned enthusiasts, blending theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Course Modules

101: Introduction to Bonsai and Care

Start with the origins and history of bonsai before exploring various styles and common species. Learn through our nine-point system to manage and care for your bonsai effectively. This module also covers the essentials of placement, watering, feeding, and general bonsai maintenance.

102: Styling Bonsai - Pruning With Intent

As a living and transient art form, bonsai requires ongoing management. This module delves into bonsai pruning techniques, discussing the timing, methods, and specifics necessary to maintain its miniature stature.

103: Repotting Your Bonsai

Bonsai trees grow in small pots with limited soil, so they need repotting occasionally. This module teaches you when to repot a bonsai and how to do it in an eco-friendly way.  You'll learn basic repotting methods and approaches for your bonsai's health and the environment.

Course Format

Each module is structured into a lecture segment and a hands-on practice session, allowing you to immediately apply what you've learned. This format is designed to help you meet and anticipate the needs of your bonsai, ensuring its long-term health and vitality.

The course is taught in English.

Times

The course runs from 10 am to 3 pm.

Our Hosts

Our Hosts, Sarah and Steve, have offered their now-famous Quinta da Chumbaria for this adventure into Bonsai. If you are quick off the mark, they may also have some accommodation available that you can let. The Workshops will be run on the vast estate, so please dress in layers. We will be working outside, and the weather is unpredictable nowadays.
