About the event

Hey Everyone,

Join me on Sunday for a hands-on Bonsai Workshop in Feltham, London (TW13 4LS). We'll focus on summer pruning techniques to guide your bonsai's development and promote inner growth.

What to Expect

In October, bonsai maintenance work focuses on preparing the trees for the colder months ahead. Here are the key tasks to carry out:

Pruning and Trimming

  • Deciduous Trees: As the leaves start to change colour and fall, it’s an excellent time to prune deciduous bonsai. Remove any dead or diseased branches and shape the tree to maintain its desired form.
  • Evergreen Trees: Light trimming may be necessary to maintain shape, but avoid heavy pruning as this can stress the tree going into winter.

Wiring

  • If you're considering wiring your bonsai to shape the branches, October is a suitable time for this. Ensure the wires are not too tight, as the branches will continue to grow slowly even in cooler months.

Repotting

  • Deciduous Bonsai: If you need to repot a deciduous bonsai, it’s best to do this after the leaves have fallen. This is the dormant period when the tree is less stressed by the process.
  • Evergreens and Conifers: These are generally repotted in early spring, but light root pruning and soil aeration can be carried out if necessary.

Pest and Disease Check

  • Check your bonsai for pests like aphids, spider mites, or fungal infections. Clean the leaves and branches, and remove any fallen leaves from the soil to prevent disease.

Preparing for Winter

  1. Depending on your climate and the species of bonsai, start considering winter protection. Some species will need to be brought indoors or moved to a more sheltered location to protect them from frost and harsh winds.
  2. For those that remain outside, consider using mulch around the pot or moving the bonsai to a sheltered location to protect the roots from freezing temperatures.

This unstructured session offers hands-on practice under my guidance, catering to both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. Bring a few of your bonsai trees to work on, or you can purchase one at the workshop.
